Electric Vehicles
Transportation is the single largest source of global warming emissions and air pollution in California. Transportation is responsible for approximately 50% of greenhouse gas emissions (when accounting for fuel production emissions) and 80% of air pollutants in the state.*
This is why California is working to rapidly grow the zero-emission passenger vehicle market, delivering cleaner air and significant reductions in climate-warming pollution.
Dairy Cows are Fueling Electric Cars and Cleaner Air
California’s ambitious mission to decarbonize its economy, including the transportation sector, requires 100% of new cars and light-duty trucks sold in California to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035. Electric vehicles will play an important role in meeting the State’s ZEV goals. California dairy farm families are doing their part to help the state meet these lofty goals. Dairy biogas is increasingly providing clean energy to power thousands of electric cars on California highways.
California dairy farms will soon be powering the equivalent of approximately 50,000 electric vehicles each year.
And more are expected in the future as California’s dairy biogas projects evolve to meet the state’s transportation future.
One California dairy, the Bar 20 Dairy, is using dairy biogas to create clean renewable electricity through a Bloom fuel cell for use in BMW’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, fueling thousands of cars on California highways. This project alone is providing benefits equivalent to 17,000 electric vehicles per year.
Increased adoption of electric vehicles has been shown to dramatically reduce NOx levels. Asthma-related emergency room visits have also been shown to decrease in zip codes with electric vehicles. The Bar 20 project alone will remove an estimated 374,390 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over an initial 10-year period.
