Heavy Duty Trucks
Dairy Cows are Fueling Heavy Duty Trucks and Cleaner Air
At least 120 dairy farms are currently capturing methane and creating clean, renewable energy including renewable natural gas. Dairy Digesters are increasingly capturing methane for use as carbon-negative transportation fuel in heavy-duty trucks. Renewable natural gas provides a faster pathway to cleaner air for disadvantaged communities, including less smog, particulate matter, and diesel exhaust.
Near-zero emission vehicles reduce NOx emissions by at least 90% and diesel particulate matter by 100%.
RNG heavy-duty trucks allow businesses to propel our economy through the movement of food and goods, while transitioning away from diesel engines more quickly. The fact is that zero emission heavy-duty trucks are not widely available, not widely serviceable for truck owners, cost prohibitive for some business owners, and not easily adaptable to all freight movement needs. In addition, wide scale deployment of zero emission heavy-duty trucks will require a staggering supply of electricity and infrastructure upgrades that our current electrical grid is not prepared to support.
In the meantime, near-zero emission technology like RNG is readily available today at a much more affordable price, including adequate fueling infrastructure (more than 600 fueling stations in California), while being a cleaner alternative to diesel.
